Chief Executive recruitment

Introduction from David Wakefield, Chair

Dear Candidate

Thank you for your interest in University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust and this exceptional opportunity to join us as our next Chief Executive. I hope that you enjoy finding out more about our Trust; our values, ambitions and how your professional and personal experience could help us deliver the best healthcare to our populations.

We are by any measure a large and complex organisation and are one of the country’s largest University Hospitals.  We have an annual expenditure of more than £1b and we have 12,300 people operating across two busy acute sites at Royal Stoke University Hospital and the County Hospital at Stafford and across our partner sites both in the Midlands and in Cheshire

We provide a full range of general hospital services for approximately 1.1 million people locally in Staffordshire and specialised services for a population of around 3 million, including neighbouring counties and North Wales. We are one of the largest hospitals in the West Midlands and have one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the country. We are the specialist centre for the North Midlands and emergency patients are brought to us from a wide area by both helicopter and ambulance because of our Major Trauma Centre status.

We play a key role within the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System (ICS), as we work closely together to transform the way health care is delivered for the benefit of our population.

Our outgoing Chief Executive, Tracy Bullock, has been an outstanding leader.  She has led our teams in transforming the Trust, navigating us out of financial special measures, putting quality and caring at the heart of everything we do.  Our improvement has been recognised by the CQC and has been achieved through what must be the NHS’s most challenging times, the Covid pandemic.  Our quality improvement programme, Improving Together, embeds quality and empowerment of staff as a fundamental part of our culture. Our 2025 Vision has set a clear direction for us to become a world class centre of clinical and academic achievement and care. One in which our people all work together with a common purpose to ensure the highest standard of care and to help make our organisation a great place to work. Tracy will leave our new Chief Executive with a strong platform on which you can build through the next stage of our improvement journey.

We are seeking an experienced and proven healthcare leader who is authentic, kind, compassionate and inclusive; who understands how to listen, inspire, build partnerships and hold people to account for the high standards we set. You will be passionate about the wellbeing of our people and populations and will be a highly visible, open and approachable leader who thrives in empowering others to be the best they can be. You will have a desire to put the patient at the centre of everything we do and a strong focus on quality, performance and financial accountability.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, then I do encourage you to read further on this site and contact our retained consultants at GatenbySanderson in the first instance for a confidential discussion; Helen Barkham, Julia St Clare or Emma Pickup of GatenbySanderson on 07807 631564.

I look forward to meeting you during the process.
